Sleep apnea is a dangerous and potentially life threatening condition which requires treatment effectively and speedily by a suitably trained doctor / dentist (extra training and expertise is required to diagnose and treat this condition) as it can have a marked effect on quality of life.

Sleep apnea is a complex condition to assess and treat, therefore, a consultation is required with Dr. Thompson in order to assess your particular condition and discuss suitable treatment options, however, in brief, we are happy to provide some basic information.

In the past, the main therapy available for this condition was CPAP (Continuous Positive Airway Pressure). This therapy is effective, but can be inconvenient, uncomfortable, noisy, and expensive. Additionally, according to research only 25-50% of CPAP patients actually use CPAP and for this reason, we do not CPAP machines and Dr. Thompson specializes in CPAP failure and non compliance.

An alternative to CPAP is a dental appliance and many patients embrace this option with enthusiasm. Dental appliances occasionally combined with minor laser procedures (carried out by an ENT) can provide an excellent alternative. Advantages of a dental appliance include comfort, convenience, improved compliance (almost 100%) and it is a non-surgical, non invasive and reversible approach.

Intra-oral appliances are used in sleep centers in North America routinely and they are well tried and tested (for 25 years or more). Dental appliances work for snoring and mild, moderate and severe sleep apnea and they last several years.

There are different types of appliances for different diagnoses and purposes. Currently, our dental appliance fees are between $3,000.00 and $ 4,000.00 depending on the type and purpose of appliance. This fee is payable by payment plan over a 12 month period (interest free) if desired. MSI currently refuses (despite my vigorous efforts) to become involved in funding but this may change in the future.

Jaw surgery can also be very appropriate for this condition in certain situations, but again, you will want to discuss non-surgical options first (it is also important to obtain a second surgical opinion before proceeding).

NOTE: Long term resolution and quality health care delivery is our goal regarding addressing your sleep apnea! Although we are very cost conscious, if treatment cost and insurance coverage is your primary concern, you may be more comfortable assessing the public health care system, instead of the services we offer.
